Blepharoplasty
What is Blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure to enhance the aesthetic appearance of the eyelids. This procedure is integral to facial rejuvenation, as it directly influences the overall aesthetic harmony of the brow and cheek regions. Upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty are recommended for addressing issues such as surplus skin and orbital fat.
Widely recognized as one of the most frequently performed facial cosmetic surgeries, blepharoplasty effectively addresses common concerns like tired-looking eyes, excess skin, sagging eyelids, and the presence of dark circles around the eyes. Moreover, it can be seamlessly integrated with other facial and skin rejuvenation procedures, such as brow or mid-face lifts, as well as complementary techniques like laser treatments or chemical skin resurfacing.
Who is the right candidate for Blepharoplasty?
- Desire to enhance facial appearance.
- Vision challenges due to sagging upper eyelids.
- Good overall health with no severe medical issues.
- To address under-eye bags and dark circles.
- Sagging upper eyelids due to fatty tissues under the skin.
- Droopy eyelids with an enlarged eye white portion.
What is the procedure?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that can target the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both simultaneously. The plastic surgeon marks areas for the removal of excess skin and fat pads, with the possibility of addressing underlying muscle. Incisions are placed within the natural folds of the eyelids, including the crease of the upper eyelid and just beneath the lashes or discreetly behind the lower eyelid. These incisions are designed to be virtually imperceptible once healed.
Following the markings, incisions are made, and fat and muscle tissues are removed using surgical instruments such as scalpels, surgical scissors, radio-frequency cutting devices, and sometimes cutting lasers. After that sutures or tissue adhesives are placed to achieve a smooth and refined contour around the eyebrows and eyelids.
What is post operative care of Blepharoplasty?
Following blepharoplasty, fine stitches are removed on the 5th or 6th day. Immediate effects involve bruising and swelling, alleviated by applying compresses during the initial 48 hours. Discomfort usually subsides within a week. When outdoors, wearing sunglasses is recommended to protect the eyelids from direct sunlight during the initial weeks.
